A complete travel guide to plan your trip to Maldives
Maldives being a dream holiday destination is often present in the bucket list of many travelers. Situated in the middle of the Indian ocean, Maldives is an archipelago of islands with an amazing diversity of sea life; corals and over 2,000 species of aquatic animals. Your trip to Maldives will be an experience of paradise on earth. In fact, the beauty of Indian ocean can be experienced variedly while traveling to Male, Maldives. While all this is true, a bit of careful Maldives trip planning can ensure that you make the best choice and have the perfect holiday and memories. Know how!
Beach villas and water villas is what Maldives is famous for. Depending on your budget, you could choose one. In case of water villas which are rightly mounted on the water, not all have a direct access into the water. So if you have fancied a dream of going into the water directly from your villa, check the images online of your selected resort. There is no point booking a water villa and getting out of villa to get into the water.
Time of arrival to Male –
Plan your flight arrival timing at Male airport in day time and at least 1 hour before check in time of your resort. This is because, depending on how interior your resort is situated in the Indian ocean, you will take more time to reach your resort from the port. Hence, the first appearance of the blissful Indian Ocean from your resort will be in day time.
Speed boat or a sea plane
There are two ways to reach to your dream island. You either book a speed boat or a sea plane. I would suggest to book a speed boat than booking a sea plane. You would have already seen enough of Indian Ocean from bird’s eye view through your flight. After all it’s a huge archipelago. Speed boat although takes double the time of sea plane but is budget friendly and adventurous.
Plan your travel in speed boat in day time.
For two reasons. The Indian Ocean can be scary at night due to high tides and loud waves which you will only be able to hear and not see. Seeing them wave messily and playfully is also an experience to gain but in day time. The boat churning the dark blue water into light blue and then into white is something you can’t miss.
Number of days for the trip –
You stay on a private island. There are options to divide your itinerary into 2 parts and hence 2 different islands. But island hopping comes with a huge cost. It is better to stay at the same island for 4 nights. In case you are a huge lover of water activities, you can plan for more days. But yes, for experiencing the beauty of Maldives and heavenly beautiful Indian Ocean, 4 nights are enough.
If you have dreams of snorkeling and checking out the coral reef especially in Maldives, check the island’s proximity. Whether you need to do a boat to a coral reef location or it is around the island itself. The latter one is better as you can yourself decide anytime to dive in the water. (Mind you, corals are thorny, can prick you)
What to pack
You are right in the middle of the Indian Ocean with limited facilities. Pack your things in such a way that you need not worry about your requirements once you reach there. Essential medicines, USD currency or a travel card is a must. A little dry snacks and ‘ready to eat’ mix will help in case you don’t like the options served at the island. Your own cosmetics, beach wear, etc. are some of the things you should not forget to pack. A swimsuit and sunscreen lotion will help a lot as you would be busy enjoying beach and water activities. There is a gift shop on every island but with limited options.
As you are on a private island, you can’t go anywhere else outside to have your meals and entertainment. (Unless you have planned changing islands in your trip which is an expensive affair) So if you are too choosy about your food choices, it will be better to check in advance the options available. Some islands have only 1-2 restaurants with a set menu. Check for buffet experience if available. Also, check in your package, if all restaurants are covered. Else you end up eating in one restaurant only or you pay separately to experience other restaurants.
Sea Sickness –
Have citrus fruits. Resorts generally provide oranges, green apples, plum, etc. so that you can stay fit and not get prone to sea-sickness in your trip to Maldives.
You can check what options are available apart from swimming pool and spa. Some offer live music or movies in the outdoors. (Some do not have swimming pool options, so choose wisely if that is a priority to you)
Hope this guide helps you plan your trip to Maldives in a better way!
